Meet Michelle Thornton, EOB’s Shelter Outreach Liaison. Michelle is a graduate student pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Work, and she has been volunteering with us since March 2019.
Here’s why Michelle said she decided to volunteer with EOB.
“I was looking for an organization whose mission and purpose coincided with my personal values and interests. I used to be a children’s activity coordinator for one of EOB’s participating shelters. After seeing the positive impact EOB had on its residents, I knew it was an organization I wanted to commit to.
Prior to volunteering with EOB, I heard nothing but positive things. From there, I did my own research. EOB is so unique – I have yet to come across another organization that is doing the same work. What sets EOB apart is the fact is how it prioritizes each child, so they leave their party feeling empowered, uplifted, and – most importantly – valued.”
When asked what she enjoys doing with EOB, Michelle said...
“I really enjoy building a rapport with the shelters. It helps to build trust and long-lasting relationships. I love hearing and receiving feedback from the shelter coordinators about how the parties went. It reflects the hard work EOB puts into making sure the parties are a success. I enjoy going to the shelters to help out and love seeing the reactions of children and their guests at their parties.”
Michelle went on to tell us about the people she’s met while volunteering with EOB.
“I’ve met some amazing people since volunteering with EOB, from fellow volunteers to families we support. In April, I attended a volunteer appreciation party. Although I was still new to the organization, everyone welcomed me with open arms. EOB has become a second family to me and I am so grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to serve with such an amazing organization.”
Lastly, Michelle stated...
“I just wish more people knew about EOB in general. It’s an amazing organization that makes a difference in the homeless population. The work EOB does speaks for itself.”
